Providing Library Services to Teens

The Tuscarawas County Public Library has been providing program for teen for the past ten years.  In addition to their other duties, three reference staff members coordinate the teen activities.  Below are descriptions of some of our most popular programs for young adults.

The “College Chat” program involved inviting several college teens from the Tuscarawas County area to talk about their college life experiences, the schools they attended, the courses they were taking, and their extracurricular activities.  The program was promoted to sophomores, juniors, and seniors and provided ample opportunity for questions and discussion.   Participants shared first-hand information about various colleges of different sizes in Ohio and other states.  Teens that came to the program learned about schools they hadn’t even thought about attending.  They especially enjoyed the fact that the panel was so close to their own age.    Read more...

State Librarian’s Report

My visits to public libraries across the state have been wonderful.  Not only is it great getting to talk with the library directors, staff and trustees but it is also very rewarding to see how many services are being provided to Ohio residents through our libraries.  Many of you have set aside a space in your libraries for young adults and many of you who do not have such a space, have set this as a high priority. You can read more information about my site visits on our website at www.library.ohio.gov/visitjournal

In this newsletter we two several articles specifically about serving teens. The first is from the Tuscarawas County Public Library and the second from Washington Courthouse. Their programs provide opportunities for their teens to engage in the library services and resources in ways that are unique to teens.
