School and Public Library Collaboration
State Librarian's Report

Schools and public libraries in Ohio have forged a number of successful, collaborative relationships to provide K-12 students with improved access to resources that support their information, knowledge, and learning needs.  These collaborative efforts come in a variety of forms, including assignment alert programs, book collections or kits for classroom use, library card campaigns, special cards and/or loan periods for educators, public library visits to schools, reading programs, school visits to public libraries, teacher and librarian training, and in some cases, joint-use facilities.

The articles in this edition of our newsletter showcase some wonderful examples of school and public library collaboration in Ohio.  The Books and Brunch program hosted by the Mansfield/Richland County Public Library provides public library staff with the opportunity to introduce new resources to librarians, teachers, and administrators from local schools in a fun, informal setting.  The Wadsworth Public Library and the Wadsworth City School District have formalized their collaborative efforts by entering into an A+ Partners in EducationSMagreement, which includes the popular Pizza and Pages book discussion program for middle school students.  A librarian from the Evergreen Community Library visits elementary classrooms each week to read to students and the Carnegie Public Library of Washington Court House regularly partners with two local school districts to host special events and promote the library’s summer reading program.
