State Librarian's Report
Libraries throughout Ohio are expanding access to a wealth of unique resources including photographs, documents, and other items by creating collections of digitized versions of thousands of resources. Digitization provides access to users who may never be able to visit the library in person and provides the added benefit of helping to preserve materials that may be too fragile to withstand the wear and tear of regular handling.
The State Library of Ohio is currently working to digitize items in its collection. Initially, materials are being selected for this project based on their value to the genealogical community. These materials are being drawn from the library’s extensive collection of government documents, which includes a variety of resources such as military records, 19th century lists of registered voters, and automobile registrations from the beginning of the 20th century.
Many digitized documents from the State Library have been added to the Ohio Memory Project, a collaborative effort of the Ohio Historical Society and the State Library of Ohio. The mission of the Ohio Memory Project is “to provide access to the historical treasures of Ohio” and currently consists of 75,000 primary sources documenting Ohio’s history. Visit www.ohiomemory.org to explore the resources contained in the Ohio Memory Project.
The State Library of Ohio has awarded Institute of Museum and Library Services LSTA grants to support many digitization efforts around the state including the Columbus Memory Project at the Columbus Metropolitan Library, Photohio – a project of the Central Library Consortium, Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County’s Virtual Library, and the digitization project hosted by the Northwest Regional Library System (NORWELD).
These represent only a few of the digital collections being created and maintained by Ohio libraries. Libraries of all types across the state are collaborating with each other and with other partners to preserve, increase awareness, and facilitate access to a broad array of valuable resources documenting Ohio’s rich culture and history.
