State Librarian's ReportThe seemingly slower pace of summer is an ideal time, and libraries the ideal place, for children, teens, and adults to read and engage in reading activities and discussions. For children and teens, it’s a time when they can choose books they want to read outside of school assignments and timelines. Adults also enjoy reading books in the summer by their favorite writers and discussing them with family and friends.
Libraries’ summer programs engage children, teens, and adults by capturing the imagination of summer with programs and events. The theme for the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) this year is Be Creative @ Your Library. Each summer as I visit libraries, I always enjoy seeing all of the fun projects and activities taking place. Many participate in the CSLP and select projects and resources from the program manual and the State Library’s summer reading web pages. Although they share a common theme, libraries use a variety of resources to best match their patrons and community.
This summer and throughout the year, libraries may also include Choose to Read Ohio programs and activities in addition to the CSLP. We’ve developed toolkits for each book with resources and information that are available on WebJunction Ohio. In this issue, you’ll read about the State Library and CSLP, summer reading programs in public libraries, and more details about the Choose to Read Ohio initiative.
