Cheilon Mitchell Preston, SERLS On April 7th, the four regional library systems of Ohio, NEO-RLS, NORWELD, SWON Libraries and SERLS, hosted the first of a series of videoconference workshops designed to allow library professionals from all around the state to come together in order to learn, network and share ideas with each other.
The focus of the workshop was library programming for adult patrons, and the first session was led by Janet Arno, Adult Services Librarian for the Cold Spring Branch of the Campbell County Public Library System in Northern Kentucky, who presented a framework for designing an adult summer reading program.
Next, Mary Boone of Wood County District Public Library in Bowling Green shared tips on setting up book clubs/discussions and bringing authors to libraries. The final session was presented by Carolyn Neil from Cleveland Public Library who demonstrated the Ready Seniors program, which helps Ohio senior citizens, age 60 plus, prepare for emergency situations.
Each presentation was followed by a short breakout session in which each location brainstormed ways these programming ideas could be implemented in their own libraries, or shared their experiences with programs already in existence at their libraries. After the breakout sessions, each location elected a spokesperson and shared their ideas with the other locations throughout the state.
Seven libraries in Ohio participated in this videoconference workshop and learning group, with thirty-eight librarians in attendance. Response from the participants was very positive, and included comments such as “I liked being able to hear comments from around the state” and “I would love to have another similar program on different topics!”
The next planned videoconference workshop and learning group will be held on September 22nd on the topic of conflict and communication. If you would like to attend, or have questions regarding this upcoming event, please contact your Ohio Regional Continuing Education Coordinator!
