The Gnadenhutten Public Library was created in July of 1934. While it began in just a single room at the local school, it soon grew with support from the town itself and the surrounding communities. In 1942 a local man by the name of D.V. Heck donated a building specifically to be the town library. This space had formerly housed the Gnadenhutten Building and Loan and it still has a very distinct bank feel to it.

When you enter the library there are high ceilings and thick, white walls that are obviously part of the original bank design. The two large windows in the front of the building see that most of the first floor is lit with natural sunlight. A sizable addition was added to the rear of the building in 1994. This expansion allowed the library to utilize the downstairs for the youth department and meeting space, while continuing to provide ample room upstairs for the growing adult collection and new technology. The Gnadenhutten Building and Loan was a sturdy bank and has remained so for the library as well so we were very careful not to alter the original structure with the expansion.

While we love our building, residing in a former bank does present us with one unique and persistent challenge. The old bank vaults are permanent parts of the building. On one hand this always provides a certain peace of mind. We know that our most valuable items are safe and in case of a dire emergency we could provide protection for our patrons. On the other hand these steel rooms are the perfect size for staff offices, but have proven to be near impossible to get phone lines and electric in, let alone internet service. Therefore, we always know they’re there, but the books and storage items get to make the most use of them.

The Gnadenhutten Public Library has been part of this historical community for 75 years. The generous donation of the former bank building has allowed us to grow and diversify. The Gnadenhutten Building and Loan was a very important place in the center of town and we like to think the library has continued that tradition.
