State Librarian's ReportOn April 30 libraries across Ohio will celebrate El Día de los Niños with multicultural programs highlighting the significance of literacy for all children. On El Día de los Niños we raise awareness of the importance of children’s collections, programs, and services for every child regardless of their language or culture. In this issue you will read about special events that libraries have planned to honor children with Latin American backgrounds. Each year at the request of the State Library and the Ohio Commission on Hispanic/Latino Affairs, the Governor has proclaimed April 30 as El Día de los Niños/Day of the Child in Ohio. This year marks the fifth year Ohio will recognize the Latin American tradition of celebrating this day. In lieu of requesting the proclamation each year, the Ohio Commission on Hispanic/Latino Affairs is asking the 128th General Assembly to designate April 30 as El Día de los Niños in the Revised Code. State Representative Marian Harris will introduce the bill on April 30.
I encourage you to support this legislation and to join Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati, and Willard as official El Día de los Niños cities as declared by the U.S. and National Latino children’s Institute.
