Mercy Medical Center - Medical Library Our library is affiliated with NEOUCOM. For the last four years, we have held a used book sale in the medical library. Donations come from employees, volunteers, and physicians at the hospital. Many donate books that they bought at the book sale the previous year. All proceeds from the sale go to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. We have consistently been able to raise close to $1,000 in the last two sales. Employees at the hospital say they look forward to the sale each year and enjoy donating books that they know will be enjoyed by other book lovers. They also feel they have also contributed to a worthy cause. I solicit library supply companies and others for prize donations. I also purchase items from the OhioLINK store as giveaways in our prize drawing in addition to a Borders Books gift card. We serve refreshments and mid-week we have a huge decorated cake for National Library Week. I promote OhioLINK, of course, and what our medical library can do to help improve patient care at the hospital via the information we provide.

Ohio School for the Deaf
National Library Week is a year-long celebration this year at the Ohio School for the Deaf. For the first time in our school's 180 year history, we are training a girl who is deaf and autistic with the goal of employment in a library.
We started our course work in the fall with nine weeks of training in copy cataloging using the Spectrum System. The second nine weeks was devoted to shelving non fiction books. The rest of the school year will cover learning to shelve fiction books, checking books in and out, filling reserves, and presenting story time presentations in sign language to preschoolers at OSD.
We are proud of the work Megan has accomplished in library class. She shines when working with computer programs, is really good at separating books by Dewey and is becoming a proficient shelver. In addition, Megan has excellent work habits. She comes to work on time, she works the full time, and she leaves on time.
Our immediate goal is to find a non-paying Library Internship for Megan for the summer of 2009. Our Transition Coordinator at the school would participate fully in Megan's Internship and the Library Assistant, Donna Henderson, will be available to help Megan make the transition from our school library to a summer Internship.
